Performance Phase:

After the initial installation, I increased the clock speed to around 2.8ghz. This increase resulted in an average idle temperature of 41 degrees celcius. I had thought that this was hot and just assumed that this must be normal since everyone had said these ran hot. The next day I came back and the temperature hadn't changed much so I decided to try to overclock it further. It seemed as though I was only able to overclock to 2.96ghz or a FSB=146. No matter what I did it would lock up if pushed any further. I knew that this wasn't the case as I heard about some people on the internet pushing it as far as 3.6ghz on air. I knew something must be up.

A couple days later, I thought I would try something else. I looked on ABIT's webpage and found that my BIOS was from July, and there had been 5 updates since that time. So, I upgraded the BIOS. I heard on another forum that a bios update was released that allowed for increasing the FSB of the processor and the PCIe seperately. This was a good thing since I did not want to be increasing the speed of the PCIe port since it wasn't even being used. So the bios updated flawlessly without any pain.

The first thing I noticed after the bios updated was that the idle temperature was now 26 degrees celsius. That was a lot cooler and I was beginning to wonder if perhaps a sensor was broken. So I started up folding and saw that the temperature does indeed rise up. I thought well, with the new bios I might as well overclock it some more. This time when I overclocked I didn't hit that brickwall. I didn't want to push the processor though since it only has the stock heatsink and fan. I just set it the FSB to be 150 and that achieved a clock speed of 3.0ghz. With one instance of folding at home running the average cpu temperature is around 33 degrees. Not bad for a processor under $150. This is more than enough performance for me to have with a webserver.

Update (October 11, 2006): After running the server 24 hours a day for the past 6 months I haven't noticed any changes to the idle temperatures. The system idles at a cool 29 degrees celsius. The whole system has continually been very responsive and does routine operations without hesitation. I would continue to recommend this product for the budget user.
